What We Like
Ahhh, there's nothing like a nice relaxing bath at the end of the day. I can't wait to sit back and relax and... no, wait, my kids are fighting because Bobby broke Shelly's favourite train. Raincheck?
If you're finding it hard to take time for you to relax, today's treat will be right up your alley. For just $79, indulge in a 60 minute floating relaxation session (plus 30 minutes to shower before and after) in a sensory deprivation pod.
Floatation involves lying in a super-saturated Epsom salt solution about 30cm deep in one of Float Centre's i-sopods. The salt-water solution is heated to skin temperature 35.5C. Once you are settled, it is almost impossible to tell which parts of your body are in the water and which aren’t.
The high density of the saline solution will make you feel completely weightless, letting your body fully relax. The float pods are specifically designed to block out all external distractions, such as sights, sounds and tactile sensations.
So what’s the story with this sensory isolation business? Research in Sweden has demonstrated the therapeutic effect of floatation on stress and pain. The last twenty minutes of a sensory deprivation experience often end with a transition from beta or alpha brainwaves to theta, which typically occurs briefly before sleep and again at waking. Many people use the extended theta state as a tool for enhanced creativity and problem solving.
If you're a newbie, don't worry - Float Culture's friendly staff will take you through a short and easy briefing on how to use their floatation pods. All their floatation rooms are designed to maximise privacy of your experience. Each room has a shower, a toilet and a hair dryer. You will be provided with a big, fluffy, fresh towel, earplugs and a natural hair/body/skin range to use after the session. Your session includes 60 minutes in the pod and 30 minutes to take a shower before and after your float, so you're ready to go for the rest of your day.
